There is a wide variety of carabiners on the market, some general use, some designed for very specific purposes. The attached video gives a nice over view of shapes and gates. This Wikipedia Article discusses types and certifications in the US and Europe. We select our carabiners to comply with the European Recreation EN 12275:1998 standard, or the US OSHA 1910 or ANSI Z359 standards. The "Rescue" standard is defined based on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1983 standard. While fine for fire when you are getting to a scene in a truck and doing full rescue systems, this tends to be more than you as an individual will need in the field for personal situations. Bear in ind because the Houdini Kit is based on SAR with a single rescuer situation, some of the equipment we use is not apporpriate in a full-on resuce system scenario. ![]() |
